3 Things to Consider Before Giving Clothing as a Gift This Holiday Season

$

It's that time of year again -- we're all busy holiday shopping. A great deal of time, energy and money is being spent buying gifts to give our loved ones to enjoy.

Have you already purchased or are you considering the purchase of clothing as a gift to give an adult or adolescent?

In the midst of your wonderful intent can you think back to a time that you received clothing as a gift that you knew you would never wear (well, not until you saw the person who gave you the gift next), yet felt a sense of obligation to keep, or worse, to wear? This is definitely an awkward position to be in and one you want the receiver of your gift to avoid.

Here are 3 things you should consider before giving clothing as a gift to an adult or adolescent to ensure your clothing choice will bring out the receiver's best energy.

1. Do you know the color and style requirements of the person you are giving the gift to? These are extremely important details to know before purchasing clothing for someone else.
Includes the following key elements:
  • Colors they would like to wear

  • How they would like to dress to maximize their body silhouette, lifestyle and personality

  • Accurate sizing

  • What patterns and fabrics align best with them

2. Has the receiver already tried the item on or will they have an opportunity to try the item on before you expect them to commit? Trying clothing on before committing to it is always a must. This key step allows the receiver of the gift to examine how they feel in the garment (example confident, excited), how others will perceive them and whether the garment is giving off their best.

3. Will the receiver of the gift mind and/or have the time to return the gift? If you are not 100 percent certain about color, size and style requirements and if the receiver of the gift has not tried on an item before purchase, it is not unreasonable to expect that the gift may need to be returned. Typically, lineups at most stores are even longer after the Holidays because of returns as well.

Now you have 3 things you should consider before giving clothing as a gift to an adult or adolescent.

By considering all of the elements above, you will avoid wasting your time, energy and money on a purchase that more often than not looks better on the hanger.

I hope this blog post inspires you to wear your authenticity!

No, The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Isn't Bad for Teen Girls

$

"Wait, you WATCH that?"

Last night was the 2014 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in London, where 47 models, including the famed Victoria's Secret Angels, strutted the runway in a immense spread of fairytale undergarments. They've done it every year for nearly 20 years (I've been watching since I was 12), and every year, that runway goes right into a pile of people who don't like it and don't think I, a teenage girl, should either.

When I look at the Victoria's Secret Angels, I see gorgeous, happy women, who work for a company that sticks with many of them for the long haul -- a rarity in this industry. Sure, they're thin, but they're not fragile -- they're toned. I mean, legs like that don't come from eating carrot sticks and water. They look like they really enjoy what they do. I mean, who wouldn't? I'd like to try and frown when I'm strapped into that much sparkling wing acreage. Watching the show is a glimpse into their world. You get these little moments that are usually confined to the pages of a catalogue or a six-foot poster in your mall. Taylor Swift sings a song that perfectly describes your life in the background, and Hozier smizes at you (and everyone else watching, but it was a special moment). It's a fun fantasy. That's why it bothers me so much when people use it as a negative factor in the body image conversation, especially targeted at teenage girls.

I'm a 17-year-old girl. A lot of people would tell you that puts me in the prime "issues with her body" range. I shouldn't be inspired by these charismatic and successful women and their amazing careers in an industry they love. Because I enjoy the show, I'm obviously some sort of bimbo who doesn't understand that I'm being negatively influenced, and that everything they do is fake and that they're just famous for looking good in underwear. I shouldn't appreciate the hard work it takes to do what they do and attempt to emulate that work ethic. I most certainly should not feel serious confidence and girl power after watching them do their thing for an hour in beautiful underwear. I should probably be looking at them and comparing my ankles to theirs, and be trying to stretch my spine three inches, and destroying myself in a gym attempting to recreate their abs. I should feel incomplete, like I am not measuring up. My self-confidence should be shattered every time Karlie's faces beams at me while I sit on my couch eating kettle corn. I shouldn't feel content with my body and the way I am, because I don't look like these Angels. Or at least, that's what the media is telling me and other girls (and boys) my age and beyond. If they're telling you that too, let me give you a piece of advice: ignore it. I say this thing a lot because it applies to a lot of things, including loving the Victoria's Secret Angels: If you love it, own it. Taylor Swift agrees with me on this. (Probably.)

It's Dry Skin Season! 8 Ways to Stop Flaking Out

By Shira Scott for GalTime.com

Flaking, cracking, itching. That about describes what Mother Nature does to my skin when the temperature begins to slowly make its descent into the 40s, 30s, 20s and below, and I don't fight back. I've become kind of a pro at keeping my skin silky smooth year-round thanks to lots of great advice from doctors, friends and yes, the internet. Here are eight tips that really work to manage and even prevent dry skin.

1. Take a short shower in warm, not hot, water. And give the tub a time out. While long, hot baths (with candles and a glass of wine, which is also a no-no) may be soothing, they can dry the skin.

2. Apply a rich moisturizing cream, lotion or ointment several times a day. Read the label carefully to make sure the product doesn't contain alcohol.

3. Wash your skin with a gentle cleanser. Avoid antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers during the colder months.

4. Use a humidifier at home to maintain air moisture. You may need to place several around the house if you don't have one installed in your heating system.

5. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid booze. Alcohol can cause dehydration.

6. Protect your skin from wind, snow and freezing temperatures by wearing gloves, a scarf and a hat. Your face and hands are particularly vulnerable.

7. Try not to scratch or rub your skin.

8. Avoid irritating or itchy clothing. You know that sweater you love that keeps you scratching all day? It may be time to give it away.

A Once Homeless Mom Of Autistic Daughter Shows Us What It Means To Never Give Up

$

What does a 42-year-old mother of four do when she loses her job and ends up in a homeless shelter? Not to mention that her youngest daughter has special needs and must be in stable surroundings or her well-being could be in danger.

She does not give up. She strives to to maintain stability even though her life, at the moment, is turned upside down. She keeps her hope and her head up and continues to do everything she can to take care of her family and make the best of a devastating situation. She is Adelina Mateo and this GLAM4GOOD post and video honors her incredible hard work, heart and dedication to her daughter Jazel.

Adelina lost her job due to downsizing and was forced to move into a Brooklyn shelter with her family when she could no longer afford to pay rent. Her daughter Jazel, who is 16, has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Jazel displays significant speech and language difficulties, struggles with expressing and regulating her emotions and suffers from significant unpredictable mood swings that can result in emotional outbursts. A predictable and routine environment is critical for a child like Jazel because any sudden change or uncertain situation can create anxiety that affects her well being. It is imperative that Adelina provide a secure environment for her daughter, but how do you do that in a homeless shelter? It's not easy, but that is just what Adelina Mateo accomplished.

My friends at Birch Family Services, the organization that nominated Adelina for a GLAM4GOOD day of recognition, tell me Adelina represents the strength and determination of Birch parents and parents of children with autism or developmental disabilities. Adelina's daughter Jazel goes to school at Birch, which is an incredible organization that provides education, habilitation, and residential services to people with developmental disabilities. Birch also helps families overcome the lifelong obstacles they face in raising children with special needs. "In the face of adversity, Adelina worked tirelessly to make sure her family was cared for and that Jazel continued to thrive," says Katie Joyner, Deputy Director of Development for Birch. "Adelina has spent most of her time thinking about her family and very little time focused on herself. A GLAM4GOOD day of attention will make her feel special and appreciated and allow her to take the time to celebrate the wonderful things she has accomplished for her family. Parents of children with special needs can often feel undervalued--experiences like GLAM4GOOD are an incredible way to remind them of the impact of all that they do for their children and also acknowledge their dedication to helping their child succeed in the face of obstacles."

After almost a year in the shelter and a tremendous amount of hard work, Adelina is back on her feet, grateful for the help and support she and her family received and also excited to be living in a new home. I decided that there was no better place to GLAM4GOOD and celebrate Adelina and Jazel than in the home Adelina and her family have worked so hard to establish, so my team and I headed to Brooklyn.

To kick off our GLAM4GOOD day, my friends at Lane Bryant, the most recognized name for fashionable plus-size clothing, gave Adelina and Jazel an incredible shopping spree. Adelina found some gorgeous outfits for her new job and Jazel picked out some fun, fashion-forward looks as well. Suave Professionals generously stocked Adelina's new home with a year's supply of hair care products and gave Adelina and Jazel new hair cuts and styling tips. My good friend, talented celebrity make up artist Susan Houser, treated Jazel and Adelina to a makeup session and got them ready for a party we hosted in their honor with the help of Creative Kitchen.

On our GLAM4GOOD day together, I asked Adelina what it is like to be a mother of a child with special needs. "One the hardest things," Adelina says, "is dealing with how people look at your child and always assuring them there is nothing wrong and they are safe to interact with her." Adelina also told me that she has to be aware of what is going on with her daughter and who her daughter is interacting with, requiring her constant vigilance. Adelina wants other women out there who are dealing with a special needs child to reach out for help. "We need to acknowledge first, that there is a problem with our child," says Adelina. "There is help for these children and for parents and siblings as well so that everyone can work together as a team. There is no reason to ever give up on your child's future."

I asked Adelina what was the best part of our GLAM4GOOD experience, and she told me that although she felt like a "Queen For A Day", it was the way GLAM4GOOD affected her daughter that was most special for her. "Before Jazel knew she was beautiful but was not taking care of herself enough. Now she is taking care of her hygiene better, dressing up and wanting to look good. Its given her attitude a beautiful lift up."

For the GLAM4GOOD team, it was an honor to give Adelina the recognition she deserves, to feel her happiness and watch Jazel thrive and express a tremendous amount of joy while being pampered too. We hope that this beautiful video of our day together will help shine a light on organizations like Birch Family Services so that families with special needs children know that there is help and support available. Please watch the video of our day and read the important, informative tips that Birch Family Services has given to GLAM4GOOD to share with parents everywhere.

1. BE PATIENT: Focus on the tasks at hand--therapies, academics, or activities that will help your child make gains. While it will take time, and there will be setbacks, you will see progress and greater independence over time. It's natural to focus on the future and the kind of person your child will be at 10, 15, 25, etc., but focusing on the present and your child's progress will allow you to appreciate their accomplishment more and fear the future less.

2. PICK YOUR BATTLES: If today isn't the day to have your child clean up their toys or brush their own hair, let it go. If the toys stay on the floor a bit longer or you child's hair looks messy, it's ok. Know when to insist and when to let your child be a child. Choose the battles worth fighting and you and your child will avoid unnecessary stress.

3. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF, YOUR RELATIONSHIPS AND OTHER CHILDREN: Parents tend to put their children and family members' needs before their own, but if your needs aren't met you can't take care of others. Always take time for yourself--whether it's getting in some exercise, meeting friends for dinner, or running errands--make sure your physical, mental, and emotional needs are met and then you'll be better prepared to care for your loved ones. Having a child with autism often places stress on the other children in the household, so be sure to make time for your other children, giving them their own special moments with you.

4. FOCUS ON YOUR CHILD'S ABILITIES: Children on the spectrum are not broken or wrong, just different. Autism is a different processing system and children on the spectrum have their own distinct strengths. Focus on your child's abilities, not their deficits, and put your effort into helping your child reach their full potential. You will be amazed what they can accomplish in a supportive environment.

Pump Up Your Style: Fashion By Bravo

(The fashionable cast of Vanderpump Rules, Image provided by Bravo TV)

I am a fashion lover and as I discussed with Bravo TV's Stassi Schroeder of Vanderpump Rules, I am intent on keeping to a limited budget. The ongoing question is how to do this without breaking the bank. I will be the first to admit that I am among countless Americans who have shunned their credit cards and are taking painstaking efforts to use only cash. So many of us are in this position, but remain closetted. Well, I for one am coming out. I have some expensive looking items, but they are either gifts, consignment store purchases or from long ago when I was a richer girl (single, living in NYC, before the "dot com bomb" and later, kids and the associated expenses of having a family. Up next in our lives: orthodontics).

This may be a reason why I like Vanderpump Rules, which would seem like a show that I as a 40-year-old would never relate to because it chronicles the shenanigans of mainly 20-somethings. Unlike those Real Housewives, with Vanderpump, we are shown a world where people have to work as servers and may dress fashionably, but make no bones about essentially living paycheck to paycheck. (Of course, we have to wonder how they might be profiting from "reality" in the long run and then there are those spin-off clothing lines cast members are launching.)

Stassi, who worked as a server in Lisa Vanderpump's restaurants for years, totally gets the thrifty thing. She says she receives the most compliments on the least expensive items she wears. In a phone conversation, she advises me as a busy mom to have a "uniform" (i.e. a white t-shirt and skinny jeans) and match it up with different accessories, such as statement necklaces, bold scarves or Stassi's favorite recommendation: a cobalt bag:

Shoppinggal links to other great, economical finds on Le Hoarder and since she is a Vanderpump viewer herself, she has an eye out for the type of style that viewers would be interested in (and more).

I decided that it might help folks like me out to make some suggestions about spicing up one's attire despite a constraining budget. For the sheer lighthearted fun of it, I've culled together some tips based on some shows currently on Bravo and through Michelle's blog. Don't go shopping for new items if you can pull together what is currently in your closet. (Note to Stassi, check out Shoppinggal!)

It's All About the Basic:
Now that you see her, you know there is actually nothing basic or ordinary about Stassi, but she is able to refresh her own look via accessories that draw the eye. She could wear the same black dress every Monday and we'd never notice the pattern.

...Or Is It All About the Bold?...
Shoppinggal starts with one bold statement piece and works the more basic offerings around it. Apparently, blondes have more fun and it's certainly seasonally appropriate to add some red -- wait, what's that? It's actually "bright neon orange" -- to winter wardrobes.

No Boohoo to This Black and Blue
In high school, my very confident fashion-forward friend Inga wore a lot of navy with black and I often wondered if she "matched." Remember that term, "matching?" (Admittedly, I'm being hyperbolic, but "matchy matchy" is not a tease-worthy term without merit). My kids tell me that matching is passe and my son recently had a friend come over who was dressed in mismatched plaid. A few years ago, black and navy and a more royal blue-like shade of navy started making appearances on runways. I tried the trend myself with a jewel necked blue dress, black cardigan and black tights that I wore to numerous events and I received many compliments on the look. Now that hint of blue that peeks out of a gray or black suit from a man's tie is a flirtatious way to approach this style. David Parnes from Million Dollar Listing LA pulls that off looking low-key cool (plus, check out the snazzy shoes that bring a bit more color to the whole ensemble):

A Crown Fit for a Princess
Stassi's friends on Vanderpump Rules have referred to her in past seasons as "Princess Stassi" and three months ago, she posted a jeweled headpiece of her own craftsmanship on Instagram. Handbands are a great way for girls to incorporate "jewelry," brighten up hair in need of highlights and also pair with glasses and a bun for the sexy librarian look. Here's a trick for hair so thick (like mine): Instead of pulling all hair back in the headband, trap enough strands underneath to make the mane appear less full looking.

2014-11-23-Georgijules.jpg

(Photo given with full permission by Stassi Schroeder's publicist)

The chic chignon look also works well with a headband like these from Deepa Gurnani (all beautifully handcrafted by the Indian designer):

Nene Leekes, another Bravolebrity, wore a thick jeweled Deepa Gurnani headband at her wedding. Nene still wears statement headbands on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, but not quite as blingy as her wedding headpiece.

Personal confession: I own a Pottery Barn treasure chest filled with beautiful headbands and it also consists of three of the intricate Deepa Gurnani styles (I also have a Deepa Gurnani clutch bracelet). Jay Lakhani, who is the owner and designer alongside his wife Deepa Gurnani says:

Each season, Deepa and I do intense trend research and zero in on a direction we will pursue. We start sourcing our raw materials from all over the world and start conceptualizing our key pieces. We travel to India every six weeks to get inspired and be extremely hands on with the embroidery process. Since every piece is hand made, we need to reinvent ourselves each season.

For Winter's "Layered Look," a Better Sweater
You may not know this if you watch the social scheming on Vanderpump Rules, but playboy Jax Taylor works really hard in a professional capacity. In addition to mixing drinks, he has a clothing and accessories partnership with XCalibur Shoes and reportedly, is very committed to the brand. Due to the weather in sunny California, we don't get to see as much of the layered look on some of our Bravo shows as we do on the runway, but here, Jax models his own sweater and with this link, we see it's not just for guys:

Nailing It
There is a lot that I can say about this picture. For instance, Lisa Edelstein (who I love!) wears a lot of white, not unlike Kerry Washington on Scandal, and white is the new black in terms of new discoveries on its streamlining/slimming of the appearance quality. However, I must point out Janeane Garofalo's nails. Dark hues give a certain polish to nails, so if you've saved your "Wicked" by Essie, you can still use it this winter.

2014-12-02-girlfriends.jpg
(Photo Credit: Carole Segal for Bravo)

Here, Stassi does a "matchy matchy" of nails to jacket, which gives a together look for the whole outfit. The contrasts between light and dark shown on and off the runway this season signify that we currently have a wide range of options across the nail color spectrum:

Topping It All Off
We've made quite a jump from the tips of our fingers to the top of our heads, I admit, but isn't fashion also about creative license? That said, I am a big fan of a great hat and there's no greater mad-hatter on Bravo than Cynthia Bailey of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Fedoras made a big comeback in the past couple of years and are now being considered as "classic." A good one may never go out of style -- although I wouldn't compare it to a white button down shirt. (Of course, the fact that Cynthia is a gorgeous model helps her pull it off!)

The Best Gifts and Gadgets for Travelers on the Road

2014-12-09-maphappygiftguidemh.jpg

If I get another travel journal this year, I may possibly gag. Get me anything off of this list, though, and I'll have to wife/husband you.

Putting pedal to the metal is tough stuff and requires tough arsenal. These are all products we've managed to get our little grubby hands on and, well, just love to bits. For instance, I can't imagine life without my travel towel or vacuum-sealer bag for dirty clothes. It sometimes requires crazy-looking gadgets at the risk of having other people look at you like you're crazy. But in truth, its the little things that makes traveling eons more comfortable. Who said flying 50,000 miles a year was fun?

This post originally appeared on Map Happy.

Some of the products we haven't managed to do a full, in-depth write up yet but based on our preliminary hands-on usage and impressions, we have already quite thoroughly taken to.

Jump quickly to a section:

Baggage | Accessories | Technology | Adventure | Services | Fun Stuff

Baggage

Sexy Muji.

Muji Hard 30L Suitcase
The Muji suitcase is an extremely stylish spinner carry-on hard case complete with a wheel lock -- all for under $200. Throw in a TSA lock, drop dead gorgeous looks and some major props to it durability after I've banged it up some and I think we've got a winner here. Move over, Tumi.
Cost: $175.50 on Muji

Osprey Farpoint 40
Osprey is famous for producing durable, quality stuff and the Farpoint 40 is no exception with its convertible form factor. The shoulder straps can be tucked away and should meet carry-on requirements for most airlines. It's also got a great suspension system for long-term comfort, an absolute must when you're being forced to wait around.
Cost: $105 on Amazon

Lo & Sons O.M.G. Bag
The ultimate girl biz bag. It looks like a purse but carries storage spots for your laptop, tablet and shoes complete with an attachable shoulder AND luggage strap. (That's just the tip of the iceberg.) It's fairly easy to clean with its nylon and dapper stylings and has enough room to put a long weekend's worth of clothes inside. This is the all-in-one bag.
Cost: $192.50 on Lo & Sons

Herschel Bowen Bag

There's a lot of crappy bags out there in the $80-90 range ("$95 sacks," Karina calls them). This is the best of the bunch for a short-to-medium trip away and offers the most organization in terms of functionality and versatility. It does lack a separate shoe compartment but it makes up for it in almost every other way in terms of a dude bag.

Cost: $89.99 on Amazon

Accessories

Bring the bathroom sink.

Bellroy Travel Wallet
There's space for your passport, a small pen for customs, a double billfold for two types of currencies, slots for four to seven cards and holy Christ, even a pouch for an extra SIM card. The best thing is that it's super slim, made of leather and most of everyone we showed it to instantly loved it. As a gift? Done.
Cost: $119.95 on Amazon

Cost: $32.95 on Amazon

Care about having a good, durable suitcase that packs everything well, so why not give your toiletry bag the same consideration? It is luggage for all your little bottles, after all. This mother of a toiletry bag is the only one you need and it's ready to go everywhere with you and store it all.

likemary's Shoreditch Merino Wool Shawl & Oversize Scarf

This piece is all about fashion and function when traveling. The chic, well-made scarf instantly pulls a haphazard travel outfit together. (Pro tip: it's sold for both the ladies and the dudes.) It also works as your own personal travel blanket and is far, far better than any scratchy thing that comes waiting on airplane economy seats. Consider it your cuddle buddy.

Cost: $64.95 on Amazon

Technology

Sometimes its time to ditch the old school.

Satechi Travel Router
There's power adapters and there's power adapters. This power adapter lets you convert to all the major plugs out there, has an added slot for USB charger and GET THIS, even turns into a router. Because when you get into the hotel, chances are you'll have more than one doodad that needs a little bit of Internet juice. Just give in.
Cost: $49.99 on Amazon

Thumbs Up UK Dual Sim Case
I'm sad there isn't an option for Android phones out there. The Thumbs Up UK case is available for iPhone 4/4S or for the iPhone 5 and enables someone to pop in two SIMs with a switch on the back to toggle between them. Downside? The phone still needs to be powered on and off in order to switch carriers but given the price, there's a lot of bang for buck happening here. (Beats buying a second phone or a dual-SIM phone.)
Cost: $33.83 on Amazon (iPhone 5)

Jetsetter Digital Luggage Scale
Who knew a digital luggage scale could look so good? This sleek piece is designed super well and is not just aesthetically pleasing but ergonomic and easy-to-grab. The engineering is tops, too. It's unfailingly accurate, not to mention durable and can handle a lot--up to 110 pounds to be exact. Fear not about it conking out on you, either, because there's a lifetime guarantee.
Cost: $18.97 on Amazon

Kindle Paperwhite

Books are really, really heavy. Send everything--from your books to your guidebooks--to your Kindle Paperwhite instead. While most tech critics think the Voyage, the latest iteration, does a great job, the Paperwhite still offers the best price-to-value ratio. I only need to charge it about once a month to get me going for the whole time. Added bonus: You can buy any English-language book from the Amazon store at any time, whether you're in Brazil or Japan.

Cost: $119.00 on Amazon

Adventure

Como?

Vapur Eclipse Collapsible Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is, like, so great and such an underrated activity until you hit your 30's. Cut down on space with the Vapur Eclipse, which can be rolled up and stowed away until you need to fill it up. Great for yoga, the bus ride or the Andes. I've brought it to all three.
Cost: $10.14 on Amazon

PackTowl Ultralite Travel Towel (Extra Large)
Douglas Adams said it best that a towel is the best tool in your arsenal to have. Step it up a notch with travel towels that dry effortlessly in hours and take up less space than your T-shirt. Do I need to remind you of the fact there's a whole day devoted to it?
Cost: $23.06 on Amazon

Point It Book
I don't have the patience to try to learn every language out there, though I often try to do my best. Short of being a language Houdini, bring this book of pictures along for the ride because it's got pictures to connote anything from your desire to stay in a four-star hotel or the fact you feel like eating some chicken.
Cost: $8.66 on Amazon

GoCup

It's a cup! It's a pill box! It's... both. Superman would love having this collapsible cup on the run while he jets from place to place. It's awesome for camping, glamping or just having the flight attendant refill for you on the plane if you get suddenly thirsty.

Cost: $10.85 on Amazon

Services

ExpertFlyer Subscription
If you've got a million miles to burn, you're probably looking for the best way to spend it all. This is where ExpertFlyer steps in: search for availability on most, if not all, of the major airlines so you can figure out the best timing to score that seat in Singapore's suites. It's worth being a little crazy sometimes if that means I can figure out when to book my free round-the-world ticket.... why hasn't someone bought me this yet?
Cost: $99.99 on ExpertFlyer

Gogo Internet In-Flight Pack
Give the gift of in-flight Wi-Fi. Sure, it's cheaper to buy ahead of time but it is even cheaper to buy in bulk for the holiday season. Gogo is offering two all-day passes for $24 or four 60-minute passes for $16. For some quick math, two all-day passes would cost $32 if you purchased them individually so you're saving up to 48%. For what it's worth, Gogo services almost all of the major airlines in the U.S. so it's perfect for domestic travel. This deal only lasts until Dec. 20 and the passes are only valid for use Dec. 20 to Jan. 4, 2015.
Cost: $16 or $24 on Gogo
World Nomads Travel Insurance
I do some crazy shit but that doesn't mean I'm batshit crazy and I still like having all my affairs in order. Things can always go wrong. I particularly like World Nomads because of their transparency and the terms are often spelled out clearly (as the best any insurance provider can do). Note: it doesn't retroactively cover any deposits or incidents that have happened before you bought it.
Cost: Depends on World Nomads

CLEAR

Give the gift of expedited TSA screening this Christmas. (If you ask me, that privilege is priceless.) This magic AmEx-looking card is a free pass for holders to cut the security lines at nine major US airports, with more set to come.

Cost: $79 for 6 months on CLEAR

Fun Stuff

Like a lotto ticket.

Luckies of London Scratch Map
Maps are a dime a dozen but the Luckies of London is a scratch-off map that is something you can truly make your own. Scratch off where you've been--either by country or region--like a lotto ticket to reveal a burst of color underneath. Mine hangs on my wall, taunting me about the places I haven't been yet and reminds me that the world is a big, big place. (Really big.)
Cost: $19.34 on Amazon

Mobile Foodie Survival Kit
Personally, I don't like eating out all the time. The Mobile Foodie Survival Kit is for the serious gourmand and is perfect for vacation rentals, extended trips or even just cooking at another friend's house. Need some oregano and cumin on the fly? No problem.
Cost: $26.00 on UncommonGoods

Handpresso Hand-Pump Portable Espresso Machine
This handheld portable espresso machine is a godsend for those people who need the guarantee of good espresso on the road. (We get it.) It's muscle-powered, requiring no batteries or outlets and is compact and light. Just add espresso and hot water, pump and you've got a quality caffeine jolt.
Cost: $100.23 on Amazon

SnapandGo Selfie Stick
Let's be real: We all take selfies and we're going to keep on doing it. The best bet? Suit up with a selfie stick, which actually means you get more in the picture than a distorted arm and close-up of a face. This adds an extra arm's length to photos. It folds up too, so it packs easily. And if you see anyone eying you oddly when you're using it, they're just jealous.

7 Secret Santa Gifts That Won't Get Shoved in a Drawer

$

Let's face it... We've all been on both the giving and receiving ends of epic Secret Santa failures. You agonize over what to buy for the set price point - stalking your recipient's cube and Facebook page for inspiration... But of course you end up buying her something that ends up stuffed in her drawer, only to be discovered when she's clearing out her desk on her last day.

I certainly know I've been on the uncomfortable receiving end of a few cringeworthy gifts over the years... I slowly open the enticingly wrapped package only to find an avenging unicorn play set. Everyone stares at me, eager to see my performed reaction. I flash a fake grin and shout a little too loud, "I just love it!" and impale the included mime doll with my new avenging unicorn's horn.

Let's end this madness right now... Everyone is going to be happy with their Secret Santa gifts this year because you're going to forward this to all your office mates. No murderous unicorns this time around...

$10 Gift: Ulta Jack Frost Limited Edition Holiday Body Lotion ($9.50)
2014-12-10-ULTABodyLotioninJackFrostVanilla2.jpg

With a delicious vanilla and cream scent, this body lotion feels more like a luxurious cream. Chock full of vitamins A, B5 & E, this generously sized (8 oz.) lotion will keep your cube mate smelling like a Christmas kitchen way past New Year's Eve. Available at Ulta stores and Ulta.com.

$15 Gift: Burt's Bees Honey Pot ($14.99)

Being that you and your coworkers probably sit in an office that blares dry heat all day, any of you would benefit from a little honey healing. This trio includes Thoroughly Therapeutic Honey & Grapeseed Oil Hand Cream, Naturally Nourishing Milk & Honey Body Lotion, and Honey Lip Balm - all of which should be passed around and shared (except the lip balm, of course!) during this holiday season. Available at Burtsbees.com.

$20 Gift: Deborah Lippmann Holiday Gifting Duet in Jazz Standards ($19.00)

2014-12-10-JAZZ_STANDARDS_duet_red_bag.jpg

Trust me, you're going to want to buy one for yourself and your Secret Santa. This adorable little glitter makeup bag contains two holiday-screaming nail lacquers - a classic red and glittering ruby. Wear them separately or layer them for extra festive flare. Available at deborahlippmann.com.

$25 Gift: IT Cosmetics The IT Factor Duo ($24.00)

2014-12-10-itphoto.png

Don't be fooled by what looks like two pale pink lip colors. The Vitality Lip Flush 4-in-1 Lipstick Stain and Vitality Lip Blush both give your lips a natural, just-bitten stain. Best part? The Lip Flush is packed with Plum Oil, Cherry Oil, Shea Butter, Aloe and Jojoba to keep your pucker hydrated, while the anti-aging Lip Blush (a lip gloss stain) has 9 butters and oils, plus collagen, peptides and hyaluronic acid. Available at Ulta stores and Ulta.com.

$30 Gift: RAMY Beauty Therapy Lipstick Set in Holiday Reds ($29.99)
2014-12-11-RamyLipstickRedsHolidaySet.jpg

You're basically giving your lucky recipient a lipstick wardrobe for the rest of the holiday season (actually the entire winter season). This trio includes a sheer red, brick red, and classic red - all infused with hydrating powerhouse ingredients like Avocado Oil and Vitamin E.

$40 Gift: Indie Lee Lavender Chamomile Moisturizing Oil ($36.00)

2014-12-11-IndieLeesLavenderChamomileMoisturizingOil.jpg

I love that this all-purpose oil for hair, face, and body has only 4 ingredients: Jojoba Oil, Apricot Oil, Essential Oils of Lavender and Chamomile. I personally adore slathering on this light yet effective oil after a long bath. Available at IndieLee.com.

$50 Gift: Laura Geller 20 Shades of Baked ($49.00)

2014-12-11-LauraGeller20shades085.jpg
When you see these highly-pigmented eyeshadow shades in person you're probably going to want to buy one of these sets for yourself. These shadows begin as liquid pigments and are then baked on terracotta tiles for 24 hours and hand-finished in Italy. The result is weightless, creamy powder shadows with vibrant color payoff. Available at Ulta stores and Ulta.com.

8 Reasons Why Fanny Packs Are the Coolest

I've got a confession to make: I'm a grown-ass man who thinks fanny packs are pretty much the bee's knees. No, not in an ironic sense -- I have a fanny pack at home, I've travelled with it many times, and I legitimately believe it's the most useful type of bag I've ever owned.

These utilitarian outcasts have been a social pariah for far too long, and it's about time somebody stood up for them. Here are eight reasons why I think fanny packs, like Pink in the early 2000s, are misunderstood.

They're way more comfortable than you think

Unless you're wearing UFO pants, stuffing your pockets with a phone, wallet, keys, Tic-Tacs, and lucky rabbit's foot can make it tough to both sit and walk; the fanny pack eliminates this issue entirely.

As an added bonus, its central location on your body alleviates the back or shoulder strain that can come from toting a more traditional murse or messenger bag. Also, if you've carrying a bigger messenger bag, you're gonna be tempted to fill it with more messages. Or, other stuff.

They make air travel incredibly easy

Your average fanny pack is the perfect size to hold a boarding pass, a passport, and a pen for filling out customs forms and/or jotting down the phone number of the attractive woman in seat 21C (JK! You're wearing a fanny pack!), with plenty of room left over.

Passing through airport security with one is a breeze, since it keeps your pockets empty. Not only that, but the little items that normally get lost in the bottom of your carry-on are within reach at all times. Best of all, it's small enough to pass unnoticed and doesn't count against your allotted carry-on and personal item. Seriously, try it. It's a game-changer.

They're whatever you want them to be

Whether you just need a little extra room for your prophylactics or a secret pocket to stash your (legally!) concealed weapon, there's a style of fanny pack to accommodate everyone's needs. It's basically the perfect in-between bag, a specialty item with myriad uses that, in a perfect world, would have universal appeal for folks of all stripes.

Batman wears one

Yes, it's technically a "utility belt," but look at it: The Dark Knight's hip-mounted container is essentially an evolved form of the fanny pack we know today. His outfit rightly eschews pockets in favor of a more practical, waist-based solution, making him just another one of the millions of fanny pack aficionados around the world -- fanny fans, if you will.

Still not convinced? Head over to Thrillist.com for 4 more reasons why a fanny pack is the best and most useful type of bag you will ever own!

Vegas Rolls Out Red Carpet for Celebrity Chef Affair

What happens in Vegas probably won't "stay in Vegas" once the world catches wind of the city's recent food and entertainment achievement featuring three of the world's most popular culinary celebrities. This month, The Venetian Las Vegas rolled out the red carpet for acclaimed chefs, restauranteurs, and event co-hosts Emeril Lagasse, Daniel Boulud, and Buddy "The Cake Boss" Valastro and launched Ultimo: A Weekend of Excellence. Experiencing Ultimo is rather like being on the guest list of the most lavish party of the season, except that it lasts for an entire weekend and includes more "bet you can't top this" ideas than a Kardashian think tank. Thankfully, this Sin City venue was offering royal-inspired, not reality show-inspired, experiences.

Ultimo's champagne and caviar kick-off was followed by a stately dinner for 174 in the property's iconic Grand Colonnade. The menu, prepared under the direction of Lagasse, Boulud, and Valastro, was a seemingly non-stop journey into culinary perfection. From Boulud's wild pheasant torte and Lagasse's winter veal stew with luscious root vegetables and white truffles to Valastro's 10-tier royal wedding-like cake, the experience felt more like Versailles than Vegas. "It's a great celebration," said Lagasse, who also hosted the farewell truffle brunch at his acclaimed Delmonico Steakhouse.

Sebastien Silvestri, Ultimo creator and The Venetian/The Palazzo food and beverage V.P., oversaw a team of 20 planners, 70 chefs, 80 waitstaff and sommeliers, and 6 winemakers from all over the world to make "the ultimate Las Vegas weekend" happen. How did the extraordinarily lavish event come to be AND appear so seamless? "You've got to believe in your team," says Silvestri, who describes his team as "the best" and his chefs as "the best of the best."

Not surprisingly, the event included fascinating recreational opportunities that rivaled the three days of outstanding food options. Guests were treated to couture fashion moments, luxury race car driving opportunities, spa treatments, and even a "Cake Boss" encounter. Participants appeared to be sufficiently wowed including comedian and television host Loni Love who documented some of the highlights for an upcoming segment on Ellen (The Ellen Degeneres Show).

Still, it was the synergy of the celebrity chefs that served as the glue for this memorably unique Vegas weekend. "It's magic", said Boulud about Ultimo. "I'm very proud to participate in this very, very special event." Admitted Valastro about the culinary trio, "We all have a lot of respect for what we do, and I think when we come together and join forces, we're a force to be reckoned with."

2014-12-10-awards.gif

With the Superbowl of the modeling world now behind us, we're officially going to have to wait 364 days until the next Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. In the meantime, we have decided to give out awards this year, to celebrate all the ladies we know and love so much. From the Best "I-Can't-Believe-She-Just-Had-A-Baby" Body to the Best Runway Smize, we have chosen our favorite VS moments and the girls who brought them to life! So take out the confetti and feather out your wings because here are your 2014 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Award Winners!

2014-12-10-DoutzenFinal.gif

Although baby Myllena Mae is evidence enough, it's hard to believe that Doutzen Kroes gave birth only 4 months ago just by looking at her! Her killer abs and super toned limbs made this decision a no-brainer!

2014-12-10-KarlieFinal.gif

It was the runway walk heard around the world! To open the final segment of the show, besties Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift walked out hand-in-hand, smirking at one another as if to say, "Damn, we look good." And boy, did they ever!

2014-12-10-IzabelFinal.gif

Brazilian stunner Izabel Goulart made quite the entrance during the Exotic Traveler segment, but it was her exit down the runway that really got our attention! Let's just say, we're all about that bass!

2014-12-10-CandiceFinal.gif

There's a lot to love whenever Candice Swanepoel hits the runway, but this year, it was that devilish Angel smize that truly won our hearts. We dare any man to try to resist that!

2014-12-10-DanielaFinal.gif

While each of this year's VS Rookies impressed in their own right, it was Brazilian beauty Daniela Braga who came out on top with a red hot performance in the Exotic Traveler segment. Paired with that adorable video of her casting session in which she samba danced for the VS execs, there was no doubt that Daniela was the rookie to beat!

2014-12-10-LilyFinal.gif

The Angel's wings are always an iconic part of the show, and something tells us that the fluffy pink pom-poms worn by Lily Aldridge will be remembered for years to come.

2014-12-10-adrianafinal.gif

No explanation needed here. Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio's entrance in the $2 million Dream Angels Fantasy Bras is a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show moment for the books!

2014-12-10-BehatiFinal.gif

When the wings came off and the Angels slipped into their party dresses, our favorite sparkly frock was easily that worn by Behati Prinsloo! The shimmering LBD was our pick of the night and our winner of Best Post-Runway Look!

Art Basel Miami: Mansion Hopping, Facials at the Ritz and Millions of Dollars Worth of Art Talk

All I needed was a short weekend away from New York to conclude that Miami is definitely the city of vice. Besides conquering the skill of packing all my belongings in a small leather backpack, my first time in the tropical city went fantastic! From Mansion hopping to drinking to beach parties and discussing art and philosophy, below are some of the highlights from my Art Basel Miami Beach 2014 experience.

An Artist Dinner With A Muse and Indian Jewelry Designer

Upon arriving to South Beach, I spent the earlier half of the night with a group of cool artists. Lana Gomez, an impressionistic painter working with mix media, invited me to a creative dinner at 1826 Restaurant on Collins Avenue. She was hosting "a night of luxury" alongside Arun Bohran, an eighth generation Indian jewelry designer and her husband Sebastian Mansicalco, Showtime's American stand-up comedian. The evening unfolded with a cocktail hour showcasing the latest jewelry from Arunashi's Marissa collection with models sashaying around the room dressed in green satin gowns, and concluded with an engaging 20-minute comedy act from Sebastian. There was also an exclusive viewing of Lana's most prized paintings hanging from the walls of the restaurant. Everyone from the staff to attendees were dressed in upscale-beachy attire, including Lana's mom, who was wearing a fabulous powder blue two piece halter top and bell-bottom-like stretch pants. I got to chat with Lana on what time of the day she gets the most inspiration (at night) and how long it takes her to complete a painting (it varies), and other fashionable small talk, like her obsession with Libertine. The stylish painter expressed that her work is related to the impressionist painting techniques, comparable to De Koenig and Frankenthaler, as she gets much of her creativity from nostalgic periods in her life. However, Lana notes that she has been painting with abstract curiosity before she even knew about the greats. Lana's authentic skill is very apparent in my favorite painting above entitled, I Can Show You The World, which emphasizes how her larger than life ideas are materialized.

Party Until You're Phoneless in Miami
The celebrations of Basel are very overwhelming. Soho House South Beach hosted a day party, followed by Hypebeast.com's turnup at the Mondrian Hotel South Beach featuring Mike Will Made It with special guest 2 Chainz, followed by Mr. Brainwash's parties at Cibu Wine Bar and at JR & Loren Ridinger's Casa De Suenos with Miley Cyrus, as well as mansion party after mansion party, not to mention three hour dinners at the Fontainebleau or the Delano or the Edition. It was literally exhausting and really hard to keep track, even though I made a schedule of events. At one point on Friday night, my friends and I decided to go to Club Mansion (which was also the VH1 + Scope After Party) when plans of going to see Paris Hilton DJ at Wall fell through. It started out as a good time, but it all went downhill when my friend's phone was stolen directly from her purse! And it didn't help that it was a full moon that night. What's even weirder is my other friend's phone got stolen at Liv the next night, right before some lady asked me for a condom. However, we all still managed to have a great time.

The Cool Art I Want in My Living Room
Below is a picture of me taking a selfie in front of this Ken Borochov piece entitled Selfie that was hanging in the MORDEKAI booth at Scope, one of Basel's satellite fairs. Replacing my room light with this installation would put me in a good mood all the time.

The Print I Bought From Lina Vicktor
This New York-based painter from London works with gold to create mix media, large scale collages of herself and other geometrical shapes in bright hues of blue, purple and red. While walking through the halls of Scope, I saw Lina giving an interview with The Times and I had to stop and stare at her. She is so poised and gives off an unearthly, majestic aura. Apparently, Lina use to work with Spike Lee with directing art videos, and she was commissioned by Billboard and LV for special projects, like paying homage to Wu Tang. When I found out she was signing small prints of her work for twenty bucks, I had to circle back to her booth to get me a piece of history in the making.

My Second Wind Took Place at the Ritz Carlton

It would be blasphemous of me to take a nap with only a short amount of time in Miami, so I decided to get the new Winter Anti-Pollution Facial treatment currently being offered at the Ritz Carlton Spa in Miami. The treatment combats free radicals most harmful to the skin and creates a shield to protect it using Thalgo America products. My esthetician did the gentlest extractions my skin has ever felt, so much so that I fell asleep and woke up flawless. After the oxidizing treatment, my skin felt energized, silky and luminous. I found my second wind at the spa, freshening up and changing into the dress I bought on sale at this random boutique on Collins Avenue before my facial appointment. I wasn't the only one with this idea; there was some major primping going on in that spa, as their Moroccan Oil hair products, fancy lotions and floor to ceiling mirrors served as the perfect space to get ready for a long evening, not to mention bottomless champagne at my request.

Miami's Biggest Mansion Owner Has Lockers In His Bathrooms
The Dean Estate, owned by businessman and bachelor Bill Dean, has lockers in the pool area bathrooms so guests can conveniently party while their belongings are safely tucked away. I attended a party on Saturday night hosted by Haute Living Magazine and Swizz Beatz, featuring guests like Miami HEAT's Ray Allen and Alonzo Mourning. While this was one of the most exclusive parties I attended at Art Basel, I found it more interesting that there was another party going on inside the house while about hundred other guests were occupying the courtyard area of the property. They told us we are free to roam, but the yachts were off limits. No fun! This was the best place to people watch as there were so many different types of characters floating around, including people dressed as Burning Man aficionados, lawyers, socialites, basketball players and their cute wives and a 120- pound dog that had VIP access anywhere on the property.

The Art District Scene
Everyone I spoke with before my trip suggested a visit to the Wynnwood area in Miami's Art District. So it was not surprising that it also served as a protesting space on Friday night in light of the Eric Garner case. Aside from the protesting that shut down i-95 for hours, the street fair was one of the only Basel events that was actually free and open to the public and featured some up and coming artists' work at affordable prices for anyone who really wanted a Basel souvenir.

Host and Hostess Gifts: A Quick and Easy Guide

$
0
0
Holiday time! Party time! Host and hostess gift time! Etiquette and tradition state you never want to arrive empty handed to a party, whether you've the recipient of the invitation, or a plus one. These gift suggestions, while meant for the rounds of parties that erupt during December, can apply all year round, as graciousness never goes out of season.

If you know the hostess and know she likes flowers, by all means bring a bouquet and include a vase. I pick up glass vases at thrift shops for a couple bucks each and have them on hand for when flowers arrive or to bring to friends with a bouquet. Arriving with a vase saves the hostess having to find a container for the blooms.

If the party-giver has green thumb, consider a houseplant. Spider plants, pothos, orchids and African violets are hardy and easy to maintain, as are rosemary plants, which serve a dual purpose of decoration and as herb for cooking and baking. (You might want to think twice about the ubiquitous holiday poinsettias; they die quickly unless replanted outside, and can be hazardous if your host has pets or children, as the leaves and flowers are poisonous).

Gourmet tea or coffee make a great host/ess gift. Trystero Coffee in Los Angeles offers small batch roastings of exotic coffees, while with a little forethought you can order personalized blends of fair trade and organic coffee from Deans Beans.

Personalized gifts can range from monogrammed coasters to a life-sized marshmallow sheet printed with an image (maybe your face!), but again these require some lead-time. If it's a sudden invitation or you're being brought along as a guest of a guest, you can grab a box of gourmet chocolates or macaroons at Laduree, or a bottle of wine (consider an interesting Sicilian or Basque wine for a unique take), or a sparking beverage like Champagne or Prosecco at a liquor store. Medea Vodka, a premium spirit with a programmable LED label with six celebratory messages already set up makes an novel and easily personalized gift. Pick up a bottle of lavender or rose floral elixir and you've made an exciting, memorable additional to your host or hostess' bar.

Koval Whiskey, made in Chicago, offers a variety of flavored liqueurs, including honey and chrysanthemum, ginger, caraway, orange blossom, rose hip and walnut which can be sipped alone or used to make cocktails.

California-based St George Spirits also makes a line of fruit brandies, but its their Absinthe Verte, the first legally made absinthe in the U.S., that makes a stand-out hospitality gift. (Drink responsibly!)

Thoughtful, simple and easy is the key for bringing a gift for your host or hostess and carries the feeling of hospitality forward beyond the winter season. Never arrive empty handed, and your calendar will always be full.

The WineFashionista's Beautiful Holiday Gift Guide

When I'm not drinking wine, I'm obsessed with makeup, lotions and potions and of course, perfume.  I've been a product junkie ever since I can remember, and my bathroom cabinets are overflowing with skin and hair care and all sorts of beauty products.

This year I've tried and tested many a cream,  and dabbed and spritzed all sorts of fragrances. I've come up with a list of my top 12 beauty products that really work -- and make great holiday gifts to boot.

1. Beauty DNA.  I've tried just about every beauty subscription out there.  I usually end up with a pile of unwanted stuff.  So I was skeptical about Beauty DNA's claim to make a perfect match for you every month.  I signed up for the $25 per month subscription.  My first delivery was the SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF -- a full size which sells for about $150.  Then I got Dermalogica's Multivitamin Power Serum -- once again full size, $65 retail.  I was hooked.

Why it works?  You fill out an extensive questionnaire about your skin type, what you like and don't like in beauty products.  You can adjust your profile at any time.  So far Beauty DNA has delighted me with every delivery.

2.  TheBalm Cosmetics.  I was in the Mission distrtict in San Francisco with girlfriends when we walked by a colorful window display of makeup.  Turned out to be theBalm's boutique.  I had never heard of the brand but it sounded cheeky and fun.  After a makeup artist redid my look, I was happy but wanted to see how the tinted moisturizer she recommended over my regular foundation held up.

DSC01768

It's perfect -- no separation or creasing.  It's light and has SPF 18. I'm sold on the rest of the line, especially the great brushes and Mary Lou Manizer, a honey-hued highlighter.

3. NeuBROW by Skin Research Laboratories.  When I saw at display for neuBROW at Cos Bar in Carmel By-the-Sea promising brow regrowth I couldn't wait to try it.

4.  Marc Jacobs Beauty Kiss Pop Lip Color Sticks.  These are so much fun! The case is a big fat silver crayon.  The color inside is intense and stays put.

5. NARS Audacious Lipsticks.  Yes, more lipstick.  These saturated colors go on soft and smooth.  The creamy consistency wears well.  Each color is named for an audacious woman.

DSC01812

My current favorite is Fanny, a plummy rich berry shade.  Love the magnetic closure -- no more lipstick case lids falling off!

6. Karuna Sheet Masks.  Ok, so you look a little like Jason from the Friday the 13th movies, so warn anyone around you before you don these sheet masks chock full with nutrients and treatments for all skin types.

DSC01793

I'm partial to the Hydrating and Brightening masks.  Be sure to rub extra serum into your neck, décolleté and hands.

7.  MitoQ Anti-Aging Serum.  MitoQ claims to be "the most potent antioxidant on the market."  Who can resist that?  With repeated use, you get soft, glowing skin.  Nice light texture too.  Sample provided.

8. Ecotools Retractabke Brushes.  These are great brush for carrying in your handbag or for your travel cosmetics kit.  Made from natural materials and EVA.  They are cruelty, phthalates and PVC-free.

DSC01769

I've got the Kabuki and foundation retractable brushes.  The brush is super soft and works just as well as more expensive brushes.  It's a great stocking stuffer at $6-$8.

9.  Aftelier Palimpsest, Byredo Black Saffron and Ajne Lakshmi perfumes.  Of all the scents I smelled this year, these three came out on top.  Palimpsest is the newest fragrance from Berkeley-based Mandy Aftel and her gorgeous natural line Aftelier.  Palimpsest is a lovely, fresh bouquet of florals.  As time goes on, the aroma transforms into something more exotic, warm and heady, thanks to the base of real ambergris.

DSC01780

Read my review of her new book Fragrant:  The Secret Life of Scent and interview with Mandy here.

Byredo is one of my favorite luxury lines and Black Saffron is exceptional.  It's a warm, spicy scent, perfect for the holidays and chilly weather.  Notes of black violet, pomelo, saffron and leather make it irresistible.

DSC01778

I adore Ajne's jewel box of a perfume shop in Carmel as much as I love Jane Hendler's natural fragrances. Big Sur has been my all time favorite of hers, but over Thanksgiving I discovered Lakshmi, a beautiful blend of blood orange, roses, amber and lotus flower.  It's exotic and mysterious.

10. Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF Dry Sunscreen.  This is genius.  I've been looking for an SPF powder to carry around as much of my work is outside in the California sunshine.  There's no brush, no mess no fuss.  You dab the pillowy soft sponge applicator on your skin to distribute the dry SPF 30 sunscreen powder.

lovely red woman lips isolated on white

It doesn't cake at all. There's even a mirror on the lid!  Like I said, genius.  I use the translucent shade but there are color shades too.  This goes everywhere with me.

11. Mani/Pedi Combo at The Salon at Whole Body.  If you live or work in or travel to Silicon Valley, you're in luck because Whole Foods' only Whole Body Salon is in Campbell.  The combo treatment here is a pampering respit, complete with a fragrant floral foot soak, warm neck wrap and hand and foot massage.

photo 2

Best of all the salon is acetone-free so there are no off-putting or harmful chemical smells and all mani/pedi tools are sanitized for each client.  Gift certificates are available so you can give the gift of inner bliss.

12. Coconut oil and scents.  One whiff of any coconut lotion or perfume and I'm transported to a tropical getaway.  and I'm reading about coconut oil everywhere as the new skin cure-all.   That's why I love these products that are good for your body and soul.

DSC01789

Capri Clear Spray on Moisturizer is a coconut oil that is unscented but has all the benefits of coconut oil for moisturizing, soothing and healing dry skin and scars.  The spray makes it convenient to use.  Sample provided.

Coconut Fashion SCENTS by Downeast Basics is an affordable 100% natural beauty line made with cocoa and shea butter.  Layer the body lotion, hand creme and perfume for long lasting wearable scent day or night.  Samples provided.

10 Signs Your Boyfriend Is From New York City

$

0
1. He asked you out somewhere cool. You met him while pondering the same Chuck Close piece at the Met, or while he was working as a dog walker in Washington Square. He caught your eye as you stood waiting on the myriad-like line of the Union Square Trader Joe's, or did body shots with you at a Bushwick warehouse rave. There is also the high likelihood the he is a coworker (and you find time to rendezvous in the supply closet), or that he bought you a drink at any one of NYC's gajillion bars.

2. He asked you to move in with him before he said, "I love you." New Yorkers are always looking for roommates to cut down on their living expenses. When his college buddy decided to teach English in Myanmar for a year and needed to sublease his 5x7 bedroom, it made sense to ask if you'd like it first. More common still is to be asked to move in when there isn't an empty room, just an empty side of the bed, because three people splitting $3,000 a month for a two-bedroom apartment in the Lower East Side is a cheap solution to an expensive problem.

3. The sex is pretty diverse. Sex with a New York boyfriend is always exciting because city dwellers come from all different states, countries, and cultures. Dating the reserved fashion model from South Africa provided you with a very different sex life than when you coupled up with a hippie dude from San Francisco, who used to live on a commune. You didn't even know you could do that thing with your thumb until you dated the 20-something intern at your law firm.

4. He's loud. "DO YOU WANT MILK IN YOUR CAWFEE?" Simple questions cause you to wince from the volume of his voice on a daily basis, but after a while, you understand that your New York man isn't trying to verbally assault you -- he's just used to screaming over the music at sports bars, yelling salutations to friends across subway platforms, or being shouted-at by his overbearing boss. He also talks with his hands, might say "fuck," "bullshit," and "jabroni" a lot for no reason, and if he's really a hardcore New Yorker, he's got a regional borough accent that is both endearing, and annoying.

5. He's always the best dressed. Tailored trousers, fitted blazers, facial hair shaved in the latest style that would otherwise look disheveled elsewhere - New Yorker boyfriends always overdress for a funeral, or look fashionably underdressed for a show at Lincoln Center, but they always look good. You'll spend hours trying to make sure that you aren't mixing a 1980s dress with 1940s shoes, because he will point it out.

6. He doesn't have a valid driver's license. He might have an ID, sure, but ask him to drive you anywhere, and his mind might explode. "Can't we just take the train? The train goes everywhere." Except to that cabin in the Catskills which looked super romantic, but is nowhere near a train station, bus depot, or taxi stand. He probably failed his driving test a few times because he freaked out during the parallel parking component.

7. He is down to try anything. New Yorkers are overstimulated by their surroundings, so there usually isn't an experience not worth having. He'll rock a trapeze lesson at Pier 40, taste chicken feet in Chinatown, accompany you to a Hedda Lettuce drag show, and even sit through the Sex and the City on-location bus tour, if that's what his baby wants.

8. Or, nothing is good enough for him. "This hot fudge sauce isn't as fudgey as the kind at Peter Luger's," he'll sneer at the dish of ice cream you decided to share at City Diner on the Upper West Side. New Yorkers have access to pretty much everything, from 1920s Jazz Age lawn parties on Governor's Island, to companies that will deliver dildos to your doorstep in an hour. It's not surprising that a New York boyfriend's standards can be so damn high, but it can be difficult to come up with creative date ideas all of the time.

9. He likes to flash his cash. Men in New York will fight you when it comes to paying the bill for Sunday brunch. They are always the first to buy a round of drinks, they have piles of gadgets, gourmet mustards, and IOU coupons from local Kickstarters, and they've perfected the art of dropping change into a homeless person's cup without breaking their stride. New Yorkers complain about how much money they don't make, but they still make more money than if they lived elsewhere in the USA, and they feel good about being able to spend it freely.

10. His marriage proposal is super cliché. If he popped the question at Central Park, the Empire State Building, the Rockefellar Centre ice rink, Yankee Stadium, or Magnolia Bakery, congratulations, you're dating a New Yorker! New Yorkers would not be caught dead in these quintessential city icons otherwise, but there is something romantic about using the Brooklyn Bridge as the backdrop to what will hopefully be the 21st century version of When Harry Met Sally. If he could set up a breakfast at Tiffany's and propose there, he would.

Quiz: Does Your Home Look Better Than You?

$

0
I enjoy watching home design reality television shows. It is fascinating when the show features a participant who is eagerly decorating their home to be a magnificent and modern showpiece of beauty, while their own personal appearance choices -- to put it lightly -- do not give off their best. People who fit this scenario ultimately have put a higher priority in investing in the decor of their home over their own appearance, on national television for that matter!

They engage with home renovation professionals and go to many home design stores spending significant time, energy and money analyzing color and style requirements for their home's optimal decor.

All the while, on the show, at work and play their appearance choices make them look like they live in a time warp, have no sense of personal style and are lacking a sense of worthiness or confidence. Can you relate? Are you one of them?

Don't get me wrong here, I agree your home should be the ultimate comfort and happy space for you and your family. I'm just saying a higher level of priority should be placed on your personal appearance choices because they contribute to how you feel about yourself and how the world receives you. Given the choice between updating a 1990's-style clean, working, functional kitchen or enhancing your own appearance to give off your best energy -- I would always recommend upgrading you first.

The universe has signed you up for a life-long commitment to YOU. It has still yet to be determined if the universe has signed you up for a life-long commitment to the building you currently reside in. What is your priority?

Your appearance choices play a role in attracting experiences including a new job, a promotion, a sale, a romantic opportunity and social opportunities. Perhaps if you are one of the show's participants, you could even attract your dream acting job. All of these are key elements that contribute to your overall happiness.

More importantly, how you feel when you look in the mirror contributes to your overall happiness. If you are not feeling excitement and joy every time you look in the mirror, that is a major problem that needs to be addressed.

There are several areas of our lives where we are judged by our appearance choices (besides on a national television show). One area is in the workplace. Here's an example to illustrate -- if you attend a job interview wearing an outdated hairstyle and suit, you may be interpreted as old fashioned, resistant to change and an outdated thinker. In today's job market these characteristics are more often than not seen as negative. Other areas we are judged by our appearance choices include the dating and social scene.

The first step is the same for both a home re-design project and upgrading your appearance -- you need to build the requirements. Here's a short quiz you can take to reveal if and where you have put a higher priority in investing in the requirements to decorate your home over your own appearance requirements. You can either read through the questions and mentally track your responses or pull out a pen and paper to keep track of your responses -- it's only a 6 question quiz to trigger your thinking.

1. You are more likely to head out to the store knowing the color requirements...

a) To decorate your home to ensure it gives off a vibrant and harmonious energy: includes walls, flooring, cabinets, fixtures etc.

b) For you: You have had a color analysis consultation and know the color choices for your hair, makeup, clothing and accessories that work with your coloring to emit a vibrant, harmonious, healthy and youthful energy.

2. Measurements: You are more likely to head out to the store knowing accurate measurements or size requirements for...

a) The element of your home that you are furnishing.

b) Yourself (note: be honest with yourself here).

3. Lifestyle: You are more likely to analyze before purchasing...

a) What furnishings are required for your home and where items will be positioned. When a piece is found, you ensure it aligns with your overall vision on how you would like your home to be received.

b) What clothing items or accessories you require for each of your lifestyle areas (work, home, play) and how you would like to be perceived in each lifestyle area. When you find a clothing item or accessory, you ensure it aligns with your lifestyle requirements and how you want to be received at the particular activity or function.

4. Silhouettes (shapes) and Material: You are more likely to know before heading out to the store...

a) Whether a round, square or rectangle table works best for the size and shape of your kitchen and what material you would like the table to be made out of.

b) What clothing silhouettes (shapes) and fabrics work best for you to maximize your body type.

5. Personality: You are more likely to know before heading out to the store and ensure your purchases include...

a) The overall personality style you would like the decor of your home to display examples include country, classic, modern, etc.

b) The overall personality style you would like your appearance to display examples include creative, romantic, classic, natural, etc.

6. Keeping Up-To-Date: Every four years you are more likely to...

a) Redecorate all or part of your home.

b) Have your hairstylist update your hairstyle and ensure you have purchased at least two new stylish outfits each season that incorporate all the 'b's' above. You ensure you have something to wear that excites you for every occasion.

If you responded 'a' for all or some of the questions above, it's time for you to consider closing the gap(s) and refining your own appearance requirements. If you feel like you need advice while refining your requirements, you could ask a close style-savvy friend or family member. Choose someone who naturally has high level and superb taste, knows you extremely well, and sees your best you when she/he looks at you OR you could seek out an image consultant who is trained in these areas.

Ultimately, building and implementing your appearance requirements is up to you. The best way to avoid dressing up your home better than you is to know your color palette, style, lifestyle and personality needs. Once you know your requirements in these appearance areas and shop with these in mind, you will be giving off your best to the world outside your home.

There is no time like the present to start spending more energy building and implementing the requirements to decorate you!

I hope this blog post inspires you to wear your authenticity!

Fashion Icon Eileen Fisher Talks About Creating Sustainable Fashion

"We don't want sustainability to be
our edge, we want it to be universal.

- Eileen Fisher

Who knew that 30 years ago, this small-framed woman from Des Plaines, Illinois would not only revolutionize women's fashion, but would also be a pioneer at saving the earth? This woman is fashion icon Eileen Fisher. Known for creating simple beautiful clothing for real-life women, her companies trend has always been sustainability (decades before the rest of the fashion industry caught on). Her socially conscious, eco-minded designs are not only iconic, but revolutionary in the world of fast fashion. The company currently employees 1,199 people with over 65 stores in the U.S and Canada has a long-term goal of being a company that is 100 percent sustainable.

Not only does Eileen Fisher thrive for the wellness of the planet, she also offers the same incentive to her employees (heck, I wish I worked there). The company encourages well-being by providing yearly wellness-related expenses such as massage, acupuncture, gym memberships and retreats. They also provide an annual stipend encouraging their employees to explore enrichment opportunities such as photography, yoga teacher training and languages. Even their offices offer wellness opportunities such as yoga, meditation and tai-chi.

In honor of the company's 30th anniversary, it is my honor to interview Eileen Fisher, the woman behind the brand.

Karim Orange: How does it feel to celebrate 30 years as a pioneer in women fashion?

Eileen Fisher: As the company celebrates 30 years, I'm reflecting on what I'm most proud of: we have stayed true to our values, both in relationship to the design concept and our commitment to creating positive change in the world. Simplicity is at the core of the design idea. I planted a seed all those years ago -- a collective of simple shapes that work together in many ways. The intention is to "solve her problem," giving women the pieces to put themselves together quickly and joyfully so they can focus on life. We believe that a good design is a result of paying attention to what women want and need. Women long to experience the magic that happens when you put on a garment that has been pared to its essence. It comes alive on your body, and you discover absolute freedom and confidence. I want EILEEN FISHER to be synonymous with clothes you don't have to over-think and that feel incredible on every time you reach for them.

2014-12-12-streeteasyfinal_03.jpg

KO: You are also now a trailblazer in sustainable practices relating to fashion manufacturing, how did this come about?

EF: Becoming more mindful about clothing means looking at every fiber and every seed and every eye and seeing how to make it better. We want to make sustainability our way of life, and and we want it to be universal. Our social consciousness team works tirelessly to ensure our partners are fully vetted working in tandem with our core beliefs. Our goal is simple: design without adverse impacts right from the start.

2014-12-12-icons_feature_05.jpg

KO: Can you please elaborate on these practices, and what a consumer should understand about them?

EF: Sustainability begins with the design. When we select fabrics and yarns, we are making choices about better farming practices, greener dyes and more innovative production. Our customers know that we work to create products designed to last and easy to care for. We also ensure transparency by telling a story about the way our clothes are made on everything from our hangtags to our website.

In closing: I would like to say that as an urban sustainable farmer, I'm looking forward to the day when sustainable practices are universal.

Symbolic Sparkle: 12 Pieces of South Asian Wedding Jewelry and What they Really Mean

$

Jewelry and adornments take on a whole new meaning in South Asian celebrations -- did you know there's an auspicious sign behind nearly every piece of jewelry a South Asian bride wears? "Solah Shringar" literally translates to "Sixteen Adornments," and is the ritual system of adorning a bride-to-be in 16 steps. In Hinduism, the ritual pays respect to the Goddess Laxmi, who represents beauty and femininity. But even non-Hindu brides in South Asia have embraced many elements of the Solah Shringar, especially since so many of the pieces are part of a traditional jewelry trousseau.
